Lack of timely hitting dooms Yankees in series-opening loss to Reds (highlights)

The New York Yankees opened their road trip on a frustrating note Monday night, dropping a 6-1 decision to the Cincinnati Reds despite several opportunities to break the game open.

Aaron Judge wasted no time getting the Yankees (45-33) on the board, launching his 28th home run of the season into the second deck in the first inning. But, that would be the only run of the night for New York as they went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine on base.

Allan Winans made his Yankees debut in place of the injured Ryan Yarbrough and cruised through the first three innings on just 24 pitches. Then, things unraveled in the fourth. He gave up a game-tying triple to Elly De La Cruz, followed by a sacrifice fly and solo homer. Winans was pulled in the fifth after allowing four runs on five hits across 4.1 innings.

The Reds added insurance in the eighth, including a De La Cruz homer and a throwing error by Anthony Volpe that plated a sixth run.

New York will look to even the series on Tuesday with Carlos Rodón on the hill. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
