The New York Mets have optioned catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced Sunday. In a corresponding move, catcher Hayden Senger was recalled.
Alvarez, who returned in late April after missing time with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, has struggled to regain his 2023 form. Through 35 games this season, he’s hitting just .236 with three home runs and 11 RBI, while splitting catching duties with Luis Torrens. Defensively, Alvarez has also faced challenges, committing three errors and allowing four passed balls, with opponents stealing 18 bases in 27 tries.
Despite going 2-for-5 with a home run in Saturday’s win over the Philadelphia Phillies, his first since June 8, defensive lapses resurfaced. Once a rising star behind the plate, Alvarez hit 25 home runs in his breakout 2023 season. However, injuries to his receiving hand over the past two years have limited his production to just 14 total homers since.
