New York set to expand protections against shady business practices

New York is poised to overhaul its consumer protection laws for the first time in 45 years with the FAIR Business Practices Act. Passed by both state legislative chambers, the bill awaits Gov. Kathy Hochul’s signature.

The legislation empowers both the Attorney General and affected individuals to sue companies for unfair, deceptive, or abusive actions. It targets subscription traps, student loan misguidance, shady car dealer tactics, and deceptive insurance and debt collection practices, among others.

If signed, the law would take effect 60 days later, promising stronger safeguards for consumers and small businesses across the state.
