A New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay $25 billion in penalties in a data privacy case stemming from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, according to The National News Desk.
A Santa Fe jury found last month that the company misled residents about its collection and protection of user data.
The jury identified more than 43 million violations of New Mexico’s unfair practices law.
Judge Francis Mathew cited repeated, intentional misconduct and senior Facebook leadership’s involvement in supporting the penalties.
New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez said the decision demonstrates that large technology companies face consequences for breaking the law.
