IRS updates refund timeline: $2,939 average checks still arriving

Taxpayers across the U.S. are still seeing IRS refunds arrive, with the average payout reported at $2,939, according to the agency’s latest figures. While the 2024 tax season ended in April, the IRS continues processing refunds for those who filed later or opted for paper checks. Meanwhile, the agency has also closed the door on all past stimulus checks and confirmed there are no new payments planned for 2025.

Refunds still processing for late filers

If you filed your return in May and requested a paper check, you may still be waiting for your refund. Mailed refunds can take up to six weeks to arrive, meaning many recipients should receive theirs by late June.

  • Refunds are only sent after your return is accepted — not just submitted.
  • The IRS’s “Where’s My Refund?” tool can help track status:
    • Return received
    • Refund approved
    • Refund sent

The IRS’s official report lists $2,939 as the average refund. However, the actual amount you receive can vary widely depending on your income, withholdings, and deductions.

Why your refund might be delayed or withheld

The IRS may withhold refunds if you owe back taxes, child or spousal support, or have defaulted student loans. The Treasury Offset Program allows the IRS to redirect your refund toward these debts.

Common reasons for delay include:

  • Filing after the April 15 deadline
  • Choosing paper mail over direct deposit
  • Ongoing reviews or audits
  • Outstanding government debts

No new stimulus checks planned

The IRS has officially closed all claims for past stimulus payments, including the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit tied to the 2021 return. The deadline to claim was April 15, 2025. Any unclaimed funds now revert to the U.S. Treasury.

Despite rumors circulating online, the IRS says there are no plans for a fourth stimulus check. President Trump previously teased “DOGE Dividends” at a Miami summit, but no official program or legislation has been introduced to support these statements.

Beware of scams and misinformation

With no new stimulus approved, the IRS warns Americans to avoid unofficial websites and fraudulent promises. If you believe you’re still owed a refund or payment, use only IRS.gov or consult a qualified tax professional.

How to check your refund status

To track your federal refund:

  1. Go to the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool
  2. Enter your SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount.
  3. Check for daily updates showing one of three stages: received, approved, sent.

For state refunds, like those in Delaware, visit your state tax authority’s official site.
