State lawmakers have approved a controversial plan to redraw judicial districts across Central and Western New York, according to The Citizen. The bill shifts Cayuga and neighboring counties into a new 5th Judicial District, while Monroe County remains alone in the 7th.
If signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul, the law would also give Onondaga County its own 14th district and create a 15th covering several rural western counties. Supporters say the changes boost representation for under-resourced rural courts, but critics argue it’s political gerrymandering.
Opponents, mostly Republicans, claim the move gives Democrats more control over the courts, possibly influencing future election disputes. The measure would take effect in January 2027 if enacted.
