Tompkins County has reduced electricity and natural gas consumption in its buildings, but energy costs have surged, according to The Ithaca Voice. A 32% drop in gas use and 3% drop in electricity from 2023 to 2024 reflect ongoing efforts under the county’s Green Facilities Project.
Despite these improvements, energy costs rose 21% due to market prices. The $28 million project, aiming for net zero emissions by 2030, includes LED upgrades, geothermal systems, and solar installations. Phase two is now underway without exceeding its allocated funds, thanks to rebates and grants.
Officials say future steps are still undecided, but nearly a third of the vehicle fleet is already electric.
