Federal officials are challenging a New York law that bars immigration arrests near courthouses, according to Spectrum News. The Department of Justice filed suit Thursday, arguing the 2020 Protect Our Courts Act obstructs federal authority to detain undocumented individuals.
Supporters of the law, including Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, say it ensures victims and witnesses can access the courts without fear. Critics, like Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo, argue the law jeopardizes safety and shields those in the country illegally from accountability.
Legal experts say the DOJ’s case may hold up, citing the federal government’s clear power over immigration. State Attorney General Letitia James vowed to defend the law, calling it essential for justice and public trust.
