A new lifesaving aircraft now bears the name of one of Upstate New York’s most prominent philanthropists.
Mercy Flight Central honored Tom Golisano on June 3 during a ceremony outside Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, dedicating its newest AW119MKII helicopter to him in recognition of his long-standing support and a recent $5 million gift to the nonprofit air medical service.
“It is especially fitting that we dedicate this newest aircraft to Tom,” said Jeff Bartkoski, President and CEO of Mercy Flight Central. “He helped us take a major step in 2006, and he is still by our side today, making it possible for us to expand, innovate, and save more lives across the region.”
Golisano previously contributed $1.7 million in 2006, enabling the organization to acquire its first brand-new helicopter. His latest donation, part of a broader $360 million commitment to communities across Upstate New York, will fund investments in aircraft, clinical training, safety, and essential operations.
Mercy Flight Central, now in its 33rd year, has transported more than 18,000 patients across 25 counties in the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and Mohawk Valley regions. Many of those missions deliver patients directly to the children’s hospital that also bears Golisano’s name.
“We are proud to deliver patients to a hospital that bears Tom’s name—a place that stands as a beacon of hope for countless families,” said Bartkoski. “This dedication is not just about a helicopter; it’s about honoring the vision, heart, and unwavering commitment of someone who has truly made our mission possible.”
As a token of appreciation, Golisano received a custom model of the helicopter at the close of the event.
