A long-delayed bill targeting packaging waste is close to passing the New York Assembly, according to Spectrum News. Assemblymember Deborah Glick says she has secured enough support to move the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act forward, with just days left before session ends.
The bill would require large companies to pay fees based on the packaging waste they generate and reduce their use by 30% over 12 years. It has already passed the Senate and has been revised to ease business concerns, though opponents warn it could raise costs and limit packaging options.
Supporters say the changes are modest and widely backed by voters. The bill must clear the Ways and Means Committee before it reaches the Assembly floor.
