White, Potter move audience with Gettysburg Address recitations

Two Midlakes middle schoolers delivered powerful renditions of the Gettysburg Address during this year’s local Memorial Day celebration.

Emma Mae White and Rylan Potter, both members of the Class of 2029, recited Abraham Lincoln’s iconic speech as part of a contest organized by Phelps American Legion Post 457. The event, supported by the National Junior Honor Society, challenged students to present the address with poise and confidence.

The contest was open to seventh and eighth graders, with NJHS members helping participants hone their public speaking skills in preparation. For both White and Potter, the result was a moving tribute that resonated with the crowd.

Potter described the experience as “incredible” and earned an invitation back to the American Legion following the event. There, he listened to stories from veterans and even met former Midlakes social studies teacher and veteran Jeff Beall, who once taught Potter’s parents, Stephanie and John.

White, who represented Clifton Springs, delivered her speech entirely from memory. She grew emotional during her final lines, aware that this was her last opportunity to take part in the tradition. One onlooker said they were moved to tears by her performance.

The Gettysburg Address, delivered by President Lincoln in 1863, honors the sacrifice of soldiers who fought at one of the Civil War’s most decisive battles.

White and Potter continue a longstanding tradition of Midlakes students participating in the contest. Each received a monetary award from the American Legion in recognition of their efforts.
