Canadian wildfire smoke may reach New York

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Smoke from massive wildfires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba could drift into New York starting Friday night, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service. The fires have already forced thousands to evacuate and are expected to affect U.S. air quality by May 30.

Western New York may see hazy skies first, with the smoke moving east into Central New York by Saturday morning. However, experts say most of the smoke remains high in the atmosphere, making it unclear whether it will significantly impact air quality.

Forecasted rain could limit visibility of the smoke. Residents can track local air conditions through New York’s DEC site or fire.airnow.gov.
