Lawmakers in Albany are making a last-ditch effort to modernize New York’s alcohol laws before the legislative session ends, according to Spectrum News. A key bill was amended Wednesday to allow wine sales in grocery stores, along with new incentives for stores that sell local wine.
Sen. Liz Krueger, who leads the Senate Finance Committee, adjusted the proposal to broaden eligibility for stores and added distance limits between supermarkets and liquor stores. Though the plan faces resistance from distributors and some liquor stores, public support remains high.
Other reforms include letting restaurants buy liquor directly from retailers and allowing liquor store owners to operate more than one location. Proponents argue these changes would boost small businesses and local economies if they reach Governor Hochul’s desk.
