Neil Young Stuns Fans With Surprise Performance of Long-Lost Classic (video)

Neil Young, 79, performs in Lakeview, Ontario

Neil Young, the iconic singer-songwriter and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, surprised fans with a deeply nostalgic moment during his recent Ontario concert.

At 79 years old, Young delivered a rare live performance of “My Boy,” a song that hadn’t been heard onstage in decades.

The moment unfolded during Young’s May 23 show in Lakeview, Ontario, part of his “Love Earth Tour” where he performed the song “My Boy” in full for the first time since his Solo Trans tour in 1983, per Billboard.

Known for mixing classics with deep cuts, Young thrilled long-time followers by pulling out “My Boy”—a track originally intended for his 1982 album Trans, but ultimately cut from the final release.

“This one almost made it onto Trans, but got lost along the way,” Young told the crowd. “Tonight, it found its way back.”

My Boy, A Song That Nearly Disappeared

“My Boy” has had a mysterious legacy among Neil Young fans. Though briefly teased in early promotional materials for Trans, the track was shelved and largely forgotten—until now. It wasn’t until 2022 that the song officially resurfaced, thanks to a special release of the Neil Young Archives series.

Hearing it live, complete with Young’s unmistakable voice and signature guitar sound, was a dream come true for diehard fans.

Neil Young Social Media Buzz

Concertgoers quickly flooded social media with clips of the performance, praising Young’s energy and vocal delivery. “Neil Young playing My Boy live at 79 is everything I didn’t know I needed,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter). Another called it “the ultimate deep-cut resurrection.”

A Career Still Full of Surprises

Young’s surprise setlist move is the latest reminder that the folk-rock legend is still evolving. With a legacy spanning six decades and a catalog of more than 50 albums, he remains as unpredictable—and beloved—as ever.

Fans attending the remaining stops on the Love Earth Tour are now wondering: What will he play next?
