Syracuse women’s lacrosse head coach Kayla Treanor leaves for job at Penn State

Kayla Treanor has left Syracuse University to become the new head coach of Penn State’s women’s lacrosse team, the schools announced Wednesday.

Treanor, a Syracuse lacrosse legend and former standout player from 2013 to 2016 led the Orange to back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2023 and 2024 during her four-year tenure as head coach.

Treanor began her coaching career at Boston College, where she played a key role in the Eagles’ offensive success and their first national championship win in 2021. She mentored top talents like Sam Apuzzo and Charlotte North and helped Boston College reach the NCAA title game each year she coached there.

As a head coach, Treanor holds a 59-24 record and was a three-time Tewaaraton Award finalist during her playing days. She is also an assistant coach with the U.S. Women’s National Team, where she is the program’s all-time leading scorer.

At Penn State, Treanor replaces Missy Doherty. The Nittany Lions finished 7-9 this season but have a history of success, including Final Four appearances in 2016 and 2017. Treanor now brings her winning experience and leadership to the Big Ten.
