Virginia residents who file their 2024 state tax return may receive up to $650 in rebates this year. The payments are part of a 2025 relief package that returns surplus tax revenue to eligible taxpayers.
Who can get the rebate?
To receive a rebate, you must meet the following requirements:
- Live in Virginia for all of 2024 and 2025
- File a 2024 state income tax return by November 1, 2025
- Owe state income tax after credits
The rebate amounts vary by filing status:
- $325 for single filers
- $650 for joint filers
If you don’t owe state tax after applying credits, you won’t qualify.
When will the rebates arrive?
Virginia will begin issuing payments in July 2025. The Department of Taxation will send payments on a rolling basis. If you set up direct deposit when you filed, your rebate will go to your bank account. Otherwise, you’ll receive a paper check by mail.
Most eligible taxpayers will receive their rebates within 4–6 weeks of filing.

How to check your payment status
The state provides a rebate lookup tool on tax.virginia.gov. You can use it to:
- Confirm your eligibility
- Track your payment
- Update your bank account information
This tool helps residents avoid payment delays and verify rebate amounts.
Why this matters for Virginians
Lawmakers say the rebate reflects strong state finances and a commitment to returning money to taxpayers. Similar rebates went out in 2022 and 2023, with over 2 million households benefiting.
Governor Glenn Youngkin praised the program as a way to help families with everyday expenses.
“These rebates are putting real money back into Virginians’ pockets when they need it most,” he said.
What to do next
If you haven’t filed your 2024 return, submit it before the November 1 deadline to qualify. Early filers will receive their payments sooner.
