New Mexico residents who file a 2024 state tax return are receiving rebate checks worth up to $1,000. The state began issuing payments in April 2025, and most eligible taxpayers will receive them by summer.
The rebates aim to provide financial relief as families deal with inflation and rising costs.
Who qualifies for the rebate?
To receive the payment, residents must:
- File a 2024 New Mexico state tax return
- Be full-year New Mexico residents
- Not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return
The rebate amounts are:
- $500 for single filers
- $1,000 for joint filers or heads of household
You do not need to apply separately. The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department will automatically issue the rebate if you meet the criteria.
When will you get your payment?
The state is sending payments in batches. If you filed early, you may have already received your payment. The state expects to finish issuing most rebates by June 2025.
- Direct deposits will arrive first
- Paper checks will follow for those without banking info on file
You can check your payment status through the New Mexico Taxpayer Access Point (TAP).
Why is New Mexico sending rebates?
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the rebate legislation in response to the state’s budget surplus. Lawmakers prioritized direct payments to help working families and older people cope with rising expenses.
In total, the state allocated $500 million for the 2025 rebate program.
“These rebates are a way to make sure every New Mexican feels the benefit of our state’s economic success,” Grisham said in a statement.
What to do next
