Brett Baty homers twice, Mets comeback falls short in loss to Cubs (highlights)

Brett Baty delivered a career night at the plate, blasting two home runs and driving in five runs, but the New York Mets (25-15) fell 6-5 to the Chicago Cubs (23-17) on Saturday night at Citi Field.

After falling behind 4-0 early, Baty ignited the Mets’ offense in the fourth with a three-run shot off top Cubs prospect Cade Horton, cutting the deficit to one. He struck again in the eighth with a two-run homer to the opposite field, giving the Mets late life. It was Baty’s second straight game with a homer and his second career multi-homer performance.

Despite Baty’s heroics, New York couldn’t come through in key spots. In the seventh, they had the tying and go-ahead runs on base with one out, but Daniel Palencia struck out Juan Soto with a nasty slider and induced a groundout from Pete Alonso to escape the jam.

Tylor Megill, who entered with a sparkling 1.09 ERA, gave up four runs across 4.2 innings.

Box Score

Francisco Alvarez gave the team a scare after being hit on the hand but stayed in the game.

The Mets will look to bounce back and take the series on Sunday at 12:05 with Griffin Canning on the hill.
