National Grid’s proposed rate hike sparks outrage

National Grid customers are bracing for sharp increases in their utility bills. The company is seeking to raise electricity costs by up to $14 and natural gas by $7.66 in the first year, with rates climbing 20% over three years.

While National Grid argues the hikes are crucial for long-term investments, customers are sounding the alarm over affordability as everyday expenses continue to rise. Some told WSYR-TV that unpaid debts from others are being added to their accounts, pushing their bills even higher.

With a public hearing on the horizon, residents like Ann Cox-Smith and Richard Suatoni say the financial burden is becoming unsustainable, fueling growing frustration across Central New York.
