Chip sealing will begin at 7 a.m. today on several roads in the Town of Ulysses. The Tompkins County Highway Department is resurfacing Dubois, Krums Corners, Willow Creek, and Kraft Roads, with one lane of traffic open but drivers urged to find alternate routes.
Town officials explain that chip sealing, also called tar and stone, is a cost-effective method to protect roads from water damage and extend their lifespan by up to seven years. Repairs are completed beforehand to maximize the preservation effort.
The process helps correct surface issues like cracking and skid resistance loss, at a fraction of the cost of traditional asphalt overlays, ensuring safer and longer-lasting roadways for the community.
