Castle Creek group pushes for creek restoration

  • Staff Report

A grassroots alliance called Friends of Castle Creek is aiming to educate Geneva residents about preserving the spring-fed creek and its watershed. The group, led by JJ Nicholson, stresses the importance of sustainability, flood resiliency, and environmental justice.

Castle Creek, which spans 6.4 miles and drains into Seneca Lake, has been heavily altered by culverts and tunnels, worsening flood risks. Advocates hope to “daylight” sections of the creek and restore its natural meanders to improve water quality and community access.

The group envisions a future where Castle Creek is protected through smart design and public engagement, linking urban trails, enhancing walkability, and safeguarding a vital Finger Lakes waterway.
