As May 7 approaches, travelers are asking whether they need a REAL ID. If you already have an enhanced driver’s license or a passport, you are set—both meet the REAL ID requirements for domestic air travel and entry into federal buildings.
For those needing a REAL ID, expect busy DMV offices and longer waits. Officials suggest using a passport instead if you already have one, to skip the crowds. A passport card is also accepted for domestic flights.
Starting May 7, anyone flying without a REAL ID-compliant document could face additional screening or be denied entry at airport security. If you’re not flying or entering federal facilities, the new rules won’t affect you.
