Jasson Domínguez delivered a clutch bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to lead the New York Yankees (10-7) past the Kansas City Royals (8-10), 4-2, on Tuesday night in the Bronx.
Max Fried gave the Yankees a strong start, allowing two runs on five hits across 6.2 innings. After a smooth first two innings, Fried gave up a solo homer to MJ Melendez in the third and an RBI double to Bobby Witt Jr. Despite some traffic in the middle innings, Fried stayed composed, striking out seven and walking two on 94 pitches.
Royals starter Michael Wacha breezed through five scoreless innings before losing control in the sixth. After a pair of two-out walks, reliever Angel Zerpa walked in a run, setting the stage for Domínguez’s game-winning double, his third hit of the game.
Luke Weaver shut the door in the seventh and eighth innings, needing just 11 pitches combined, while Devin Williams sealed the win with a perfect ninth for his third save.
The Yankees will aim for a three-game sweep Wednesday night, with Clarke Schmidt making his season debut against Kansas City’s Kris Bubic.
