The New York Mets (11-5) kicked off their series in Minnesota with a solid 5-1 win over the Twins (5-12) on Monday night at Target Field, powered by strong pitching and timely hitting.
Clay Holmes set the tone early, continuing his recent dominance by striking out six over the first three innings. Though he faced some adversity in the fourth and fifth, he limited the damage to just one run on a sacrifice fly. Holmes finished with eight strikeouts across five innings, allowing two hits and two walks, lowering his ERA to 3.66.
Pete Alonso sparked the offense with a two-out RBI single in the third, driving in Luisangel Acuña to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Alonso reached base four times and now boasts a .345 average with a 1.137 OPS. Acuña also impressed, getting on base three times and extending his hitting streak to four games.
Mark Vientos contributed with an RBI double in the sixth, and Juan Soto broke out of a slump with a two-run homer in the seventh, his first extra-base hit since April 7.
The Mets bullpen continued its steady performance, combining for four scoreless innings to secure the win.
New York looks for a third straight victory Tuesday night, with Tylor Megill facing off against Bailey Ober at 7:40 p.m.
