Chicken coop destroyed in Starkey fire, all animals survive

A chicken coop in the Town of Starkey was destroyed by fire on the night of March 21, but all animals escaped safely, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire broke out around 9:20 p.m. at 5029 Lakemont Himrod Road. Emergency responders arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames. The building was declared a total loss.


The property is owned by 74-year-old Harry Ayers of Lakemont. Donald Lawrence, 49, also of Lakemont, was treated at the scene and released by Dundee Ambulance. Officials did not specify the nature of his injuries.

Responding agencies included Dundee Fire and Ambulance, Himrod Fire, Penn Yan Fire, the Yates County Office of Emergency Services, and the Yates County Fire Investigation Team. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
