A Clyde-Savannah school librarian has been granted intervenor status in a legal battle over five contested books in the school library, according to a ruling by Acting State Supreme Court Justice Denise Hartman.
The Finger Lakes Times reports that Emilie Bastian was allowed to join the case due to how the outcome could affect her job duties. However, the judge denied a similar request from New York State United Teachers, saying the union lacked a direct stake and could instead file a supporting brief.
The lawsuit stems from a 2023 book challenge by a local minister and Moms for Liberty. After a reversal by the school board and a failed appeal, they filed a court petition now under review.
