The New York Mets’ bats came alive Monday night, slugging four home runs in a 10-4 series-opening victory over the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park. After a quiet weekend in Houston, New York’s offense erupted, highlighted by Pete Alonso’s grand slam in a seven-run fifth inning.
Starling Marte got things started with a solo homer in the third, tying the game at 1-1. Luisangel Acuña legged out an infield single in the fifth and scored on a Jose Siri double, giving the Mets the lead. With the bases loaded, Alonso crushed a full-count sinker into the right-center seats, making it 6-1. Luis Torrens followed with a two-run blast, and Brandon Nimmo added another in the sixth for a commanding 10-1 lead.
David Peterson pitched six strong innings, striking out nine while allowing two solo homers. Huascar Brazobán provided two scoreless frames, while Danny Young surrendered two runs in the ninth.
The Mets look to continue their offensive surge on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. against Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. Kodai Senga will take the ball for New York, his first start of the season.
