Rotary grant launches student science project to protect Canandaigua Lake

A new education initiative will give local students the chance to help protect Canandaigua Lake while learning real-world science skills.

The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association has received a $10,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Canandaigua to launch the Jim Holden Legacy Project. Funded by the estate of Jim and Jane Holden, the program honors the late James Holden, a longtime Rotarian and community advocate for youth and education.

Students will use professional water testing equipment to monitor environmental conditions in the lake, which supplies drinking water to more than 70,000 people. They will measure pH, temperature, chloride levels, and check for harmful algal blooms—contributing directly to the association’s research and conservation efforts.

“Jim always gave of his time, talents, and treasures to assist others,” said Rotary board member Mark Sheppard. “By supporting CLWA to educate students about the lake, we’re honoring Jim’s lifelong dedication to the greater Canandaigua community.”

The project will include two components: a summer camp for middle school students and a classroom program for high schoolers, developed in collaboration with local schools. Both modules meet New York State science standards and promote inquiry-based, hands-on learning.

Rising temperatures, invasive species, and pollution are increasing threats to the lake’s ecosystem. CLWA leaders say the new program not only builds students’ technical knowledge, but also their sense of responsibility to the environment.

“We are deeply grateful to the Rotary Club of Canandaigua for their generous support and shared commitment to protecting Canandaigua Lake,” said CLWA Board President Susan Martenson. “Together, we’re not only safeguarding a vital natural resource but also working to inspire the next generation to continue this important work.”

A public media event highlighting the project’s launch and student impact is planned for this summer.
