Rep. Elise Stefanik is set for an April 2 Senate confirmation vote to become U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, nearly five months after her nomination by former President Donald Trump.
Stefanik’s expected confirmation and subsequent resignation will trigger a special election in New York’s 21st Congressional District. State law requires Gov. Kathy Hochul to schedule the vote within 80 days of the seat becoming vacant, likely setting the election for July.
Democrats have already tapped political newcomer Blake Gendebien as their candidate. Republicans, facing a crowded field, are still deciding who will represent their party in the GOP-heavy district.
