Law enforcement officials are searching for a Rochester man who led police on a dangerous pursuit through Canandaigua and surrounding areas Monday evening before escaping.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and the Canandaigua Police Department were attempting to arrest 26-year-old Jonathan J. Matthews during a long-term drug investigation on Bristol Street when he rammed an unmarked police vehicle and fled the scene. Authorities say Matthews then drove onto a sidewalk in front of a residence before heading west on Bristol Street, with police in pursuit.
The chase continued onto rural roads north toward Farmington but was called off due to safety concerns.
Matthews remains wanted on an outstanding Ontario County bench warrant for criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree, both Class B felonies. Additional felony drug charges will be filed upon his arrest.

Authorities also confirmed that Matthews, who has previous weapons convictions, will face further charges related to the police pursuit. He was last seen driving a black 2016 BMW X5 with New York State license plate KSR 9946.
Officials warn that Matthews should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office at 585-394-4560.
