Potter voters approve appointed clerk and highway superintendent positions

Residents of the town of Potter have voted to change how two key positions—town clerk and highway superintendent—are filled. In a special election held Tuesday, both propositions to make the roles appointed rather than elected passed by notable margins.

The measure to appoint the town clerk rather than electing one was approved by a vote of 82 to 57, while the proposition to appoint the highway superintendent passed 78 to 61. Town officials had argued that the increasing complexity of these positions required qualified candidates with specific expertise. By shifting to an appointment system, they said, the town could ensure that the most capable individuals are chosen.

Under the new process, candidates for these positions will first be approved by the Yates County Personnel Office before being interviewed and selected by the Potter Town Board.

The decision aligns Potter with a growing number of municipalities opting to appoint officials for specialized roles rather than relying on elections. Supporters believe it will lead to more effective management of town operations, while opponents have raised concerns about reducing voter influence over key town functions.

With the propositions passed, Potter’s town government will begin implementing the new appointment process in the coming months.
