A 19-year-old Canandaigua man was killed early Tuesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck on State Route 5 and 20 in the Town of Hopewell, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 6:07 a.m. when Scott W. Sampson, 40, was driving a 2020 Dodge Ram westbound and hit Calif Saunders, who was in the westbound driving lane. Emergency responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene before transporting Saunders to F.F. Thompson Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities closed State Route 5 and 20 for two and a half hours while the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office Crash Management Team investigated the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Canandaigua Emergency Squad and the Hopewell Fire Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
