Schumer faces backlash from Democrats over funding bill

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is under fire from fellow Democrats after choosing not to block a Republican-led government funding bill. Progressives and centrists alike criticized his decision, with some accusing him of betraying the party and siding with President Donald Trump.

Schumer defended his choice, arguing that a government shutdown would hand Trump even more power over federal spending. His stance sparked calls for a primary challenge in 2028, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among those leading the charge. Meanwhile, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries distanced himself, refusing to express support for Schumer.

The controversy highlights a deeper divide within the party, as some Democrats see the funding fight as a missed opportunity to gain leverage over Republicans. Despite the backlash, Schumer insists his decision was necessary to prevent greater harm.
