The historically bad 2024-25 Syracuse men’s basketball season is finally over.
On Wednesday night, the No. 14 seeded Orange (14-19) fell 73-53 to No. 6 seeded SMU (23-9) in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Spectrum Center.
J.J. Starling followed up his 27-point first-round performance with a team-high 16 points, while Jyare Davis added 14. Eddie Lampkin Jr. grabbed 10 rebounds, marking his 22nd double-digit rebounding game this season.
Syracuse closed the first half strong after falling behind 31-22, with a late three-pointer from Starling and a block by Naheem McLeod leading to a Davis triple that cut the deficit to 31-28 at the break. However, SMU took control early in the second half, opening with a 10-0 run, including back-to-back threes from Chuck Harris, to extend their lead to 41-28.
Davis briefly pulled Syracuse within eight, but the Mustangs quickly rebuilt their advantage, maintaining a double-digit lead for the final 13:29. SMU outscored Syracuse 42-25 in the second half to secure the win.
