Ontario hikes electricity rates for New Yorkers amid trade war

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a 25% increase in electricity prices for 1.5 million American customers starting Monday, retaliating against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs. Ford warned he could cut off power exports entirely if tensions escalate.

The surcharge affects electricity supplied to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, potentially adding CA$100 ($69) to monthly bills. Ford dismissed Trump’s temporary tariff reprieve, calling it meaningless. Ontario expects to generate CA$300,000 to CA$400,000 daily from the increase, supporting local businesses and workers.

Ford also urged Alberta to tax its oil exports, predicting that higher U.S. gas prices would force a policy shift. Amid worsening U.S.-Canada tensions, he vowed to maximize economic pressure until Trump ends the trade war.
