Congressman Langworthy introduces bill to streamline broadband permitting

Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) has introduced new legislation aimed at cutting bureaucratic delays in broadband expansion. The Wireless Resiliency and Flexible Investment Act, unveiled Wednesday, seeks to codify a 2020 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule that streamlines the permitting process for wireless network upgrades.

The bill would require state and local governments to approve applications for improvements to existing communication towers and equipment within 60 days. By expediting these approvals, Langworthy hopes to accelerate the expansion of wireless services, including 5G, across the country.

“There are still large swaths of areas across Western New York and the Southern Tier that don’t have stable cell service,” Langworthy said in a statement. “If we are going to invite economic investment to the region, our people desperately need broadband. It is crucial that we cut red tape so these areas can get the service they need.”

Supporters of the bill argue that faster approval times will help wireless providers enhance network reliability and provide better service to underserved communities. Langworthy expressed optimism that the legislation would receive bipartisan support as it moves through Congress.
