As the New York prison workers’ strike enters its 10th day, Gov. Kathy Hochul has taken legal action against participants. While no arrests have been made yet, 380 workers were served court papers, and Hochul has warned that arrests could follow if they don’t return to work. Strikers also face docked pay and loss of state health benefits.
Though negotiations are ongoing, the union representing correction officers does not officially support the strike. Meanwhile, 3,500 National Guard members have been deployed to manage prison operations, and some incarcerated individuals have been relocated for safety reasons.
Hochul is considering additional measures, including transferring inmates to out-of-state facilities.
