The #7 Finger Lakes Community College women’s basketball team kicked off the postseason with a hard-fought 56-52 victory over #10 Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) in the NJCAA Region III Sub-Regional Round on Tuesday. The win marks FLCC’s first postseason triumph since 2018, when the Lakers were ranked #1 in Region III.
Jazzmyn Lewis (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) led the charge, recording a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Lewis made her presence felt on both ends of the court, coming up clutch at the free-throw line by converting 9 of 15 attempts and anchoring the defense with 7 steals and 2 blocks.
Dalayla Alexander (Ellicottville, N.Y./Ellicottville) chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Kierra Shaugnessy (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) dominated the boards with 12 rebounds. Jade Roussell (Dundee, N.Y./Dundee) and Ella Robinson (Hallstead, P.A./Blue Ridge) contributed 8 and 7 points, respectively, combining for 9 rebounds.
After trailing 31-28 at halftime, the Lakers surged in the second half, disrupting TC3’s momentum with stifling defense. FLCC limited the Panthers to just 32% shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers to complete the comeback.
The Lakers now turn their attention to a tough quarterfinal matchup against #2 Jefferson Community College in Watertown, N.Y. The Cannoneers defeated FLCC 71-35 earlier this season, but the Lakers will be eager to reverse that outcome and continue their postseason run.
