Finger Lakes Community College has secured a $1 million grant from Empire State Development to support the construction of an integrated plant science education complex on its main campus. The funding marks a significant step toward replacing the college’s outdated 1979 greenhouse with a modern facility designed to support horticulture and environmental science programs.
The proposed 20,000-square-foot facility is expected to cost between $24 million and $26 million, with site work anticipated to begin in 2026. FLCC is collaborating with Ontario County on the project, which may also involve partnerships with community agencies such as the Ontario County Soil and Water Conservation District.
“This state grant and other funding sources show the widespread agreement of the importance of supporting sustainable agriculture and greater synchronization in our upstate communities,” said FLCC President Robert Nye.
In addition to state funding, the project has received $1 million in federal appropriations announced by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer last year, along with $2.8 million in private donations—largely from an estate gift. Fundraising efforts will continue as Ontario County explores funding options for the remaining local share, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by New York State.
The new facility will feature a hydroponic system and modern climate controls to create optimal growing environments. While the current greenhouse will be torn down, the college and county are still evaluating the best location for the new structure to maximize sunlight exposure.
Empire State Development focuses on strategic investments in infrastructure and workforce development, with sustainability as a key priority. Meanwhile, the Ontario County Soil and Water Conservation District aims to protect natural resources while promoting environmentally responsible farming practices.
