President Donald Trump’s administration criticized sanctuary cities, accusing Democratic leaders of protecting violent criminals and obstructing immigration enforcement. In a statement, Trump vowed to continue deporting undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes, arguing that left-leaning politicians are endangering public safety.
“President Donald J. Trump is removing illegal immigrant killers, rapists, and drug dealers from our streets and sending them back where they belong — but if politicians in so-called ‘sanctuary’ locales had it their way, these vicious criminals would still be free to roam our streets,” a statement from the administration read.
They pointed to specific cases in cities with sanctuary policies, including St. Paul, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. The administration also cited arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of undocumented individuals convicted of violent crimes, including rape, murder, and drug trafficking.
The statement singled out Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Chicago Mayor Karen Bass, and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for opposing cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE. Trump criticized their positions, arguing that their policies undermine public safety.
Sanctuary cities generally limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, aiming to build trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities. Supporters argue that such policies prevent racial profiling and encourage undocumented individuals to report crimes without fear of deportation. Opponents, including Trump, claim the policies allow dangerous criminals to remain in the U.S. instead of being deported.
Trump’s renewed focus on immigration enforcement comes as the 2024 election cycle remains heated, with public safety and border security among the top concerns for voters.
