Why unwanted calls persist despite Do Not Call Registry

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Being on the National Do Not Call Registry doesn’t stop all unwanted calls. The registry only blocks sales calls from legitimate companies, but scammers, robocalls, political campaigns, and charities can still reach you.

The FTC advises using call-blocking tools as the best defense against spam and illegal robocalls. Consumers can also report violations to the registry. Despite ongoing complaints, the FTC has seen a decline in unwanted calls for three consecutive years.

Companies caught violating the registry can face fines exceeding $50,000 per call. While the registry helps reduce sales calls, it remains ineffective against fraudulent and non-commercial calls.
