Michael Lane, the longest-serving elected official in Tompkins County, announced he will retire from the county legislature at the end of his term in December after 28 years in office. Representing Dryden and Freeville, Lane is the sixth legislator to forgo re-election this year.
A moderate Democrat, Lane has long worked to represent his diverse district, championing projects like flood control, sewer expansion, and economic recovery efforts. His political career began in village government before he joined the legislature in 1993.
At 75, Lane will continue practicing law but sees his retirement as an opportunity for new leadership. Reflecting on his career, he emphasized the importance of public service and democracy, earning a standing ovation at Tuesday’s meeting.
