The Village of Newark has announced the hiring of Braxton Guy as the new director of the Alex Eligh Community Center (AECC), bringing a local leader with a passion for youth development into the role.
A 2017 graduate of Newark High School, Guy holds an associate degree in human services from Monroe Community College and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from SUNY Geneseo. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at SUNY Brockport.
Guy’s experience working with young people dates back to high school, when he began coaching basketball at the AECC—a commitment he has maintained every year since. His career has included roles as assistant director for the school-age program at the Phelps Community Center and community schools coordinator at Newark Middle School, where he connected families to resources and organized student events focused on life-building skills.
In response to community calls for more youth activities, Guy launched The Future Run the Streets (FRTS) program in 2021. The initiative, which began as a small running club training for the Newark Turkey Day Race, quickly grew into an ongoing program offering kickball leagues, roller skating events, wiffle ball games, and other activities aimed at keeping kids engaged. Over the past four years, FRTS has served more than 200 youth across Wayne County and beyond.
“I look forward to continuing to help create a community that youth can be proud to call home, and creating a space and programs where all youth feel welcomed and heard,” Guy said of his new role.
Village leaders expressed enthusiasm for his appointment.
“We are excited to have Braxton join our team,” said Mayor Jonathan Taylor. “He has already proven to be a leader for the youth in our community, and we are looking forward to seeing what he can add to our team at the AECC Community Center.”
AECC Board President Alex Quku echoed the sentiment. “I am looking forward to working with Braxton closely to ensure a smooth transition. I am excited about the new energy and programs Braxton will bring to the AECC.”
Guy will spend the coming months working alongside current director Mr. Muscolino and the AECC staff as he transitions into his leadership role.
