Most Americans oppose expanding presidential power

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

A new Pew Research Center survey finds that most Americans believe expanding presidential power—both for Donald Trump and in general—is too risky. About 65% of respondents oppose giving Trump more authority, while 78% express concerns about expanding executive power for any U.S. president.

Partisan divisions are clear: 90% of Democrats oppose giving Trump more power, whereas 59% of Republicans believe it would help address national issues. However, GOP opinions have shifted, with fewer Republicans opposing expanded presidential authority now compared to when Joe Biden was in office.

Overall, both parties remain skeptical of increasing executive power, though opinions fluctuate depending on which party holds the presidency.
