Senate leader joins calls for NYC mayor’s resignation

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins has urged New York City Mayor Eric Adams to step down, citing his corruption charges as a distraction from governance. Her statement follows a wave of resignations from federal prosecutors who opposed a Justice Department directive to drop charges against Adams.

The DOJ’s acting deputy attorney general argued Adams’ cooperation was needed for Trump’s immigration policies, sparking concerns of political interference. Several lawmakers, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, have also called for Adams’ removal.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has the authority to remove Adams but remains cautious, calling the situation “serious” but resisting immediate action. Adams, however, insists he will not step down, vowing to focus on leading the city.
