Binghamton woman sentenced to 18 months for social security fraud

  • Staff Report

A Binghamton woman has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for stealing more than $25,000 in social security benefits. Loretta Washington, 60, was convicted of social security fraud and will also face three years of supervised release. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General Special Agent in Charge Amy Connelly on Monday.

Washington had previously pleaded guilty to charges stemming from her time as a representative-payee for a minor child’s social security benefits. In September 2018, the Broome County Department of Social Services removed the child from her custody after the child was found walking alone on a road at night. Despite the removal, Washington failed to inform the Social Security Administration of the custody change and later falsely claimed the child was still under her care. Over a three-year period, from October 2018 to November 2021, she continued to collect benefits meant for the child.

As part of her sentence, Washington was ordered to pay full restitution to the Social Security Administration. The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General and prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul J. Tuck.

This sentencing highlights federal efforts to hold individuals accountable for fraud involving public benefit programs.
