A new bill in New York would allow Governor Kathy Hochul to postpone special elections, including one to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik if she becomes UN ambassador. Proposed by Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, the bill aims to reduce election costs and boost voter turnout by consolidating elections with general cycles.
Republicans, however, view the move as a partisan power play. Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt criticized it as a tactic to leave a GOP-held district vacant, weakening their slim U.S. House majority. Congressional Republicans escalated the clash by urging a RICO investigation, accusing Hochul and Democratic leaders of election interference.
Democrats dismissed the accusations, asserting the bill promotes democratic participation and efficiency.
