Raymond Welker honored for 70 years of fire service

State Senator Pamela Helming presented Raymond “Ray” Welker Jr. of Walworth with a New York State Senate Commendation Award, recognizing his 70 years of service with the West Walworth Volunteer Fire Department. The award was given at the department’s annual banquet, celebrating 78 years of community service.


Welker, who joined at 18, continues his family’s legacy of firefighting, with his sons, grandson, and other relatives actively volunteering. In 2024, he responded to 87% of the department’s calls, showcasing his ongoing dedication.

Senator Helming praised Welker’s impact as a mentor and inspiration to future generations of volunteers. The award highlights significant contributions to volunteer and community service.
