Geneva and Sodus store owner talks drop in business amid ICE enforcement in Finger Lakes

Shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration people in the Geneva-area began noticing that some businesses were less busy. Maria Hernandez, owner of Hernandez Mexican Grocery in Geneva, has launched home delivery services after seeing a sharp drop in business.

She recently spoke with RochesterFirst.com and attributed the decline to heightened immigration enforcement, which has made many in the Hispanic community too fearful to shop in person.

Hernandez, who has served the community for five years, noted that even her busiest day, Friday, recently brought in just three customers. In response, she began taking orders and delivering products to customers’ homes to meet their needs.

Since starting deliveries, business has improved, with multiple daily orders at both her Geneva and Sodus locations. Hernandez plans to continue the service indefinitely to support the community.
