NYS DOT warns drivers as roadwork ramps up

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

With road construction season in full swing, New York officials are urging drivers to slow down and stay alert in work zones, citing hundreds of dangerous incidents last year, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.

DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez highlighted the risks highway crews face, including speeding vehicles, distracted drivers, and even harassment. In 2024, work zones saw 322 intrusions, two driver deaths, and 138 injuries. The state is doubling down on safety enforcement through initiatives like Operation Hard Hat and speed cameras, which have already issued over 425,000 citations.

Dominguez emphasized these measures are about saving lives—not revenue—and called on drivers to respect workers risking their lives to maintain New York’s roads.
